Selected screenings
World premiere. Official competition, Cinéma du Réel
One of 17 features in the official competition, we were thrilled to world premiere at this important international festival hosted by Centre Pompidou. 'Adnan being and time' had two sold-out screenings (including at the 370-seat historic L'Arlequin cinema), a great post-film discussion, so much social media love, and a special shout-out from James Benning at the awards ceremony.
Sneak preview - National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
In times of violence and war, it was moving to see Etel Adnan projected on the largest public screen in the United States, the National Gallery of Art. An engaged audience stayed for nearly an hour to ask questions and respond. Preceded by a short by Luke Fowler.
Opening night film, Écrans du Réel, Beirut
What an honor open Beirut's most important film festival, a dream to bring the film 'home' to Lebanon in this way. Projected in the gorgeous Metropolis cinema (built on the site of the 2020 dock explosion), it seemed like all of Beirut came out, so much so that another theater had to be opened to match the crowd. I was so grateful to spend a week in Lebanon, in conversation, walking along the corniche, through neighborhoods, soaking in the layers of history and the powerful immediacy at once. It felt like destiny.
Featured film, International panorama, Brussels Art Film Festival, Brussels Cinematek
As one of only 14 films in the international panorama (alongside work by Ira Sachs, Marie Losier, and Andrei Ujicǎ), 'Adnan being and time' screened in Brussels' legendary Cinematek to a sold-out audience, followed by a post-screening discussion (in French)!
Solo screening and conversation, Kunstnerneshus Kino, Oslo
Oslo's coolest cinema brought out a full, great audience–many had never heard of Adnan–and you could feel them take in the film. After, poet and literary scholar Wendy Lotterman's questions opened up and expanded the discussion around Adnan and the film. What great overlap, to have a 'No Master Territories: Feminist Worldmaking and the Moving Image.' in the museum next door - co-curated by programmer Silja Espolin Johnson, Erika Balsam and Clemens Ottenhausen.
Sneak preview - outdoor projection, Cinema Akil, Dubai
An overflow crowd and beautiful community - a teaser for our expected premiere later this year in Dubai. Co-presented by Alserkal Art Month.
Opening night film, Ekrani i Artit, Shkodër, Albania
Honored to open this special festival, curated by Tea Paci. This year's theme, 'avash, avash' is alert to layers of deep attention and time opening with 'Adnan being and time' and closing with a film by Abbas Kiarostami, with great films by Ben Russell, Neozoom, Maryam Tafakory, Bill Morrison, selected short films from Palestine, and artist moving image. A nourishing and deeply human festival experience. Details.
