Selected screenings
World premiere. Official competition, Cinéma du Réel
'Adnan being and time' world premiered at Cinéma du Réel in Paris. One of just 17 features in the official competition of this important international festival hosted by Centre Pompidou. The film had two sold-out screenings (including at the 370 seat historic L'Arlequin cinema), a packed film discussion, the most social media love of the festival, and a special shout-out from James Benning at the awards ceremony. A perfect beginning!
(Special preview) National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC.
In times of violence and war, it was especially moving to see Etel Adnan projected on the United States' largest public screen at the National Gallery of Art. The engaged audience stayed for nearly an hour to ask questions and respond. A great program.
Opening film, Écrans du Réel, Beirut
It was an honor to be selected to open Beirut's most important film festival, the best possible way to bring the film 'home' to Lebanon. Projected in the gorgeous Metropolis cinema (built on the site of the 2020 dock explosion), it seemed like all of Beirut came out, so much that another theater had to be opened to match the crowd. I was so grateful to spend a week in Lebanon, in conversation, walking along the corniche, taking in the neighborhoods, soaking in the layers of history and the powerful immediacy at one. It felt like destiny.
International panorama, Brussels Art Film Festival, Brussels Cinematek,
As one of only 14 films in the international panorama (alongside work by Ira Sachs, Marie Losier, and Andrei Ujicǎ), 'Adnan being and time' screened in Brussels' legendary Cinematek to a sold-out audience, followed by a post-screening discussion (in French)!
Screening and conversation, Kunstnerneshus Kino, Oslo
Oslo's coolest cinema, where people attend because they trust the programming, brought out a full, great audience–many had never heard of Adnan–and you could feel them take in the film. After, poet and literary scholar Wendy Lotterman's questions opened up and expanded the discussion around Adnan and the film. What great overlap, to have the show in the museum above, co-curated by programmer Silja Espolin Johnson, Erika Balsam and Clemens Ottenhausen: 'No Master Territories: Feminist Worldmaking and the Moving Image.'
(Special sneak preview) Outdoor projection, Cinema Akil, Dubai
This special outdoor screening brought an overflow crowd and beautiful community, a teaser for our expected premiere later this year there. Co-presented by Alserkal Art Month.
